French Tulip Redux

That was quick. A reader writes that as of today the French Tulip at 3903 24th St. has reopened under new management:
The French Tulip is open again! A nice man was in the store today setting up. He says it will still be called French Tulip - it will carry just flowers, not soaps and other items. The prices seemed pretty good, and the flowers are beautiful.

Well this just means we will now have four flower shops in Noe Valley. The newest one is opening where Artsake used to be. It's getting as bad as the nail salon business.

Why haven't these entrepreneurs at least done an informal market study to see where there are gaps that need to be filled in the neighborhood? If you saw 3 flower shops (plus Whole Foods selling flowers) within 2 blocks, why would you think another shop is what the neighborhood really needs? Can't they at least find one friend to help with a back of the napkin SWOT analysis before opening shop? The sad truth is, it doesn't take a crystal ball to figure out how long these places will survive.

Leticia had to close the store in the first place because business was so slow, and that was without the new flower shop down the street. So I have to wonder why the new owner thinks he can make it. I wish him lots of luck and hope I'm wrong, but it worries me that he is investing in this business.
